Information about Rhode Island

Rhode Island is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. Principally known as being the smallest state by area, Rhode Island is located in the New England area in the Northeast corner of the United States.

Rhode Island official nickname is "The Ocean State", a reference to the state's geography, since Rhode Island has several large bays and inlets that amount to about 30% of its total area. The smallest by area is known for its Fishing ports at Galilee and Newport. Rural areas of the state support small-scale farming, including grapes for local wineries, turf grass, and nursery stock. Tourism generates over a billion dollars a year in revenue. Warwick Rhode Island was voted by CNN Money Magazine on of the top 100 best cities to live in.

For Education Rhode Island is in the top tier for some of the best High Schools in the Nation. Rhode Island was ranked 16 out of 50 for the 2005-06 in the "Smartest State" rankings, based off of Morgan Quinto's annual reference guide "Education State Rankings 2005-06." Quinto rated each state on 21 positive and negative factors-removing spending per student from the consideration and focusing more on student performance and personal attention from teachers. Top Colleges & Universities in RI

Brown University- Brown University is a private educational institution and was founded in 1764. Nationally recognized as being a member of the Ivy League, Brown University is ranked 14th by U.S. News & World Report as being 14th in the nation.

University of Rhode Island- The university began as the state's first agricultural school but now comprises eight colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, the Oceanography, Pharmacy, Nursing, Human Sciences, Environmental and Life Sciences and Engineering. The undergraduate tuition for residents per year at the University of Rhode Island is $6,440 and $21,294 for non-residents

Johnson & Wales University- Johnson & Wales University, located in Providence, is a private educational institution and was founded in 1904. There are 15,000 students attending Johnson & Wales University. A career-oriented education is stressed at Johnson & Wales University

Rhode Island College- There are five schools at Rhode Island College: School of Nursing, School of Management, School of Social Work, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education and Human Development. Tuition for resident undergraduates is $5,256 and $13,664 for non-resident undergraduates

Providence College- Located in Providence, it has an undergraduate student population of approximately 4,000. Providence College is affiliate with the Catholic Church and is administered by the Dominican Order of Friars. It is the only institution of higher education to have this unique affiliation. It is also the only college that requires its students to complete a Development of Western Civilization core, a series of courses that Providence College believes is important in the maturation of its student body. The undergraduate tuition at Providence College is $28,920.
